Tributes to oldest WWII veteran who has died aged 110

Donald Rose, who served in the Queen's Royal Regiment as a sniper, survived a bullet to the leg during the D-Day landings in 1944.

His death was confirmed by Erewash Borough Council, which had presented Mr Rose with a freedom honour in May.

Paying tribute to the veteran, who lived at a care home in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, council leader James Dawson said: "Erewash was privileged to count him as a resident."

Originally from Westcott, Surrey, Mr Rose, born on Christmas Eve 1914, joined the regiment at the age of 25 and went on to train as a sniper.

He served in North Africa, Italy and France, and attributed his longevity to the salty water he drank during his time as a Desert Rat.
