Man found dead as clean-up begins after Storm Goretti

A MAN was found dead after a tree fell on a caravan during Storm Goretti.

The fatality was confirmed yesterday as a massive clear-up operation began in the wake of the devastating “weather bomb” with tens of thousands of homes around the country still without power.

Police said emergency services were called to the Mawgan area of Helston, Cornwall, on Thursday night after the tree came down during a rare red weather warning for wind.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: “Tragically, a man aged in his 50s was located deceased within the caravan.”

Hundreds of trees were brought down during Storm Goretti with gusts of up to 99mph in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly while fields in Kent were flooded.

Around 27,000 properties were still without power in the South West yesterday, along with more than 2,000 in the West Midlands, which remained covered in a blanket of snow following freezing overnight temperatures.
