What's next for Liverpool?

We begin our feature by paying tribute to Liverpool and Portuguese international Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident last week, alongside his brother and fellow professional player Andre Silva. The football world mourns the loss of two great players. The 2024/25 season was one to remember for anyone associated with Liverpool, as the Reds clinched their 20th English league title — moving level with eternal rivals Manchester United. The Merseyside outfit showed they could thrive without Jurgen Klopp, as new manager Arne Slot proved he had what it takes to lead one of England’s biggest clubs back to the summit of domestic football. Soccer Laduma’s Matthew Petersen reflects on a season of change, triumph and heartbreak, with insight from former Bafana Bafana striker Bradley August.

Liverpool have shown great ambition to strengthen the squad, spending nearly £200 million (R4.8 billion) to sign the likes of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz — the latter arriving for a club-record fee of £116 million (R2.7 billion).

“Frimpong played in England before, so he’s used to being in England. I'm happy that they signed a left-back that’s played in England with Bournemouth,” August said. “It's always nice to sign players that come from the same league because it's so easy for you to adapt and get used to the English conditions and the English Premier League.”

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
