This has always been home for me

Sinesipho Mali’s return to Chippa United as Sporting Director is more than just a career move, it’s a homecoming rooted in loyalty, purpose, and a long-term vision for South African football. After years of climbing the professional ladder, gathering experience from Kaizer Chiefs, the national team, and a successful stint with Sekhukhune United, Mali has circled back to the club that gave him his first break. Now entrusted with a leadership role that bridges technical football and strategic planning, he’s determined to lead the Chilli Boys with a blueprint built on community, talent development, and sustainability. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Masebe Qina, Mali reflects on his journey, his vision, and what it means to serve the game both on and off the pitch.

Masebe Qina: Greetings, SD, and thanks for the opportunity to talk to Soccer Laduma readers. You’ve come full circle – from Performance Analyst to Sporting Director at Chippa United. What does it mean to you to return to the club in such a pivotal leadership role?

Sinesipho Mali: Yes, for me, it really means a lot to come back to where it all started in terms of my professional career. When the opportunity was presented by the club, I had to consider it seriously because I’ve always maintained a very good relationship with the chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi, and also the general manager, Mr. Sandiso Mpengesi. So, it wasn’t a surprise when the call came. In fact, when I left Kaizer Chiefs in 2022, the first call I got was from the chairman. This club has always felt like home to me. To return now, but in such a significant capacity, and to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading the sporting strategy of the club – it means the world to me. It’s not just about returning; it’s about contributing in a meaningful way. I’m excited and truly looking forward to helping drive the club’s progression. When I first came here (in 2017), it was a massive opportunity for me, because Chippa gave me my first role in the PSL. They allowed me to get involved at a high level while still being very young and hungry to learn. I worked hard, and I was surrounded by people who pushed me. I was also very hands-on at the time – involved in video analysis, opposition scouting, even working on post-match reports and player performance reviews. All of that shaped me. Now, coming back with all that experience I’ve gained elsewhere, I feel even more equipped to give back and take the club forward. In many ways, it’s not just a job, it’s a calling. I understand the heartbeat of this club, the aspirations of its supporters, and the significance of building a legacy rooted in loyalty and purpose.
