The tough spell at Royal AM would no doubt have prepared him for any challenges that lie ahead. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Tshepang Mailwane, the former Bloemfontein Celtic and Maritzburg United coach talks about signing for Magesi, why he is not desperate for a job and how he kept going during the difficult times at Royal AM.
-
John Maduka has a fresh start at Magesi FC after a difficult spell with now expelled Royal AM and he is determined to make up for the challenging experience he had in KZN. Announced as the new head coach at Magesi a few weeks ago, the coach has the tough job of making sure that the club keeps its topflight status after their rookie campaign saw them win the Carling Knockout.
Tshepang Mailwane: Coach Maduka, congratulations on your appointment as head coach of Magesi FC. How did this move happen?
John Maduka: Thank you. Yeah, you know, it's always about engagements and asking if you are available. Remember, it's between two parties. It's not only a one-sided thing. You must be interested as a person to work there, and the team must be interested. Then from there, you can come to an agreement and see where the team wants to go and what it wants to achieve.
TM: Was Magesi the only team that showed interest in you?
JM: There were a couple of them that I can’t mention, but I thought Magesi was the right team. Magesi is one of the most ambitious clubs. In their first season in the topflight, they managed to win a trophy, and that tells you a lot. With the ambition that I have, I like challenges. Here is a challenge that I have, and I hope everything goes according to plan.
TM: When you are a free agent as a coach, do you take any job that comes your way because you need money at the end of the month, or do you sit down and fully analyse if it’s a job that suits you?

South Americans are very fragile
Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
