From the terraces of Chatsworth Stadium in Durban to the technical areas of Major League Soccer, Alan Koch's journey has been anything but ordinary. Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, the former defender has carved out an impressive coaching career across seven countries, leading professional clubs in North America and helping develop players who have gone on to win league titles and compete at the highest level of the global game. Now firmly established in the United States and Canada, Koch remains deeply connected to his South African roots. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Masebe Qina, the 50-year-old coach reflects on carrying the South African flag abroad, working with players such as George Lebese and Alphonso Davies, his dream of one day coaching in the PSL, and why he believes the MLS can be a genuine pathway for South African talent. Koch also shares his thoughts on Bafana Bafana's resurgence and the significance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on North American soil.

MQ: Would you be interested in coaching in South Africa one day?

AK: Yes, one day I would be very interested. I remember growing up and tuning into SABC2 to watch games. I remember going with my dad to watch AmaZulu FC play. Those were special times. It is a dream of mine to come back one day. It's where I'm from. It's where I grew up. I've coached a few professional clubs now, which is a privilege, but to do it at home would mean a lot.

MQ: What would need to be in place for you to seriously consider a move to the PSL?

It would have been the end of him at Downs

I was surprised, amazed and impressed because I never thought Mamelodi Sundowns would play such quality football against MC Alger and achieve the results they needed.

I'm a lot stronger than I realised

When Gabriela Salgado suffered a leg injury during Banyana Banyana’s Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinal loss against Nigeria in Morocco in July last year, it looked like her career had just taken a serious knock.

I shed a tear

There is something happening in the Betway Premiership that cannot be ignored. Goalkeepers are having a serious battle for the honour of having the most clean sheets in a season and this can only be good for Bafana Bafana. Sipho Chaine, Brandon Petersen, Darren Keet, Darren Johnson, Renaldo Leaner, Ronwen Williams and Dumisani Msibi are shining brightly with clean sheets this season and it’s exciting. Johnson, in particular, is one of the surprise names on the list. He joined AmaZulu FC after being an understudy to Stanley Nwabali at Chippa United and he’s won the number one jersey ahead of Ghanaian international Richard Ofori at Usuthu. Soccer Laduma spoke to the former Cape Town Spurs goalkeeper about his journey to Usuthu, which had its challenges.

Sundowns were forced to rest players

We are in the second round of the season and things look exciting at both ends of the log table, in fact even in the middle as there is a lot to fight for. Every round of fixtures tells a story, and it looks like we are going to have an exciting end to the campaign. Let me wish our representatives in continental football, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC and Kaizer Chiefs, all the best in their final round of group stages matches this weekend.
