Let me congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on their impressive 2-0 win against MC Alger to secure their spot in the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League on Saturday afternoon.
-
Sundowns really played well and proved that they were deserving winners of the clash that had such an interesting build-up. The team's performance was out of this world, and I wish them all the best in the quarterfinals.
It was such a pity that Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC were eliminated in the group stages, after finishing third and fourth respectively, in their groups. Amakhosi went to the last game, needing at least a draw to secure their spot, but ended up losing the game to Zamalek SC 2-1.
On the Nedbank Cup
This weekend sees the Nedbank Cup Last 16 fixtures taking place and we all can't wait to see who will be booking their tickets to the quarterfinals as the teams get fewer. It is interesting and encouraging to see four lower tier teams still involved in the tournament after the first round.
Now, let's see how many of them will be making it past this weekend to get closer to the final. It has been a while since we last had a team from the lower ranks playing in the final of this tournament. That said, the tournament continues to provide a competitive platform for several amateur and lower leagues teams to test their strength against some of the most established teams in the country.
On social media reaction
This is the third column ever since I started writing for Soccer Laduma that I'm penning with a heavy heart. I wrote about losing my parents and my daughter, and those were two sad columns that hit me hard. This one is very close to those two in terms of how it makes me feel. I'm heartbroken to have to do this because I have listened to and watched people being wrongly accused, misrepresented or misunderstood on certain issues.

Rele and Appollis key to Bucs' success
If Orlando Pirates finish the season with a domestic treble in the trophy cabinet, it will most probably be down to the influence of Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis.

We knew the task was bigger than us
Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns on their crucial CAF Champions League semi-final first leg win away to Esperance on Sunday night. It was a gutsy performance by the Brazilians as they showed a lot of character against such a hostile crowd. The atmosphere was unbelievable as Esperance supporters came out in their numbers to try and intimidate their visitors, but the Chloorkop-based team stood their ground and remained resolute.

More eyes are on women's football
Nthabeleng “Dunga” Modiko’s job as the head coach of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Women’s FC doesn’t just entail leading the first team in the Hollywoodbets Super League, the Varsity Cup and the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Women’s Football Championships. She’s also in charge of their Sasol League and Local Football Association (LFA) sides. Last year the Kroonstad-born coach was named USSA Women’s Football Championships Coach of the Tournament after leading her side to victory. She was also in charge of the UJ side that finished seventh in the Hollywoodbets Super League. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Mzoxolo Budaza, the former Banyana Banyana captain opens up about her duties at UJ, what women’s football needs and the role played by supporters in the development of community women’s clubs.
