SuperSport surviving... for now?
Soccer Laduma
|June 12, 2025
What will become of SuperSport United? That's probably one of the biggest questions on the minds of local football supporters, with talks yet again of Matsatsantsa being up for sale. The club has been struggling behind the scenes, and it could be that it is holding on for dear life, unless there is a big turnaround in its situation. Soccer Laduma looks into what's causing the strain at the club and why SuperSport would consider selling in the future. For now, it seems, the club's management is trying to keep SuperSport alive.

What the Siya crew has been told...
SuperSport United have become a big part of the history of South African football, but there has been concern of late with reports suggesting the club is up for sale.
This is not the first time that the club has been linked with a sale and Soccer Laduma has been told that Matsatsantsa's management has seriously considered selling in the past for various reasons.
The past season was one of the club's worst in PSL history, as they avoided going into the endof-season play-offs thanks to a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows on the final day of the Betway Premiership season.
They finished in 14th place in the standings and talk of the club being sold to a Bloemfontein Celtic consortium gathered momentum towards the end of the campaign.
Soccer Laduma understands that SuperSport could keep their top-flight status, for now, but that does not mean things are going smoothly behind the scenes.
In fact, indications are that the club is really struggling to stay alive and there's growing concern over how long they will be able to keep themselves in business in the PSL.
Some of the big concerns at the club, according to information received by this publication, are the club's struggles in the transfer market and the lack of silverware in the last few seasons.
SuperSport have not been able to go into the market and pay big transfer fees for players or attract some of the big names in local football. They have had to review their transfer policy over the last few years, and this has seen them focusing on promoting more young players and looking for free agents rather than forking out transfer fees.

South Americans are very fragile
Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
