The disappointing relegation of Cape Town City to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, after finishing second last on the Betway Premiership log and failing to take advantage of their second chance in the Play-Offs, brought a dark cloud to Western Cape's football. Although, by the same token, we have to celebrate Orbit College for a sterling performance in the mini league, as they made their intentions clear from the word go that they were in it to win it, one just can't overlook the deeper impact the Citizens' demise will have on our football.

The Citizens’ relegation isn’t just about their senior team because they have junior teams that are attached to their senior team for as long as it is in the elite league. The team made a number of big-name signings which gave an indication that they were a team here to stay, a team looking to make a mark in the top-tier division. Also, this has been, until recently, one of the teams challenging for honours and drawing young supporters from across the country. Their presence made a positive impact not only on the Western Cape but also on South African football at large. City were pretty much on an upward trajectory and looked destined to be one of the teams to upset Gauteng teams’ dominance until recently. Even in their worst season, they still gave a good account of themselves against the Big Three.

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
