Coach Rhulani Mokwena is considered an exceptional professional who has taken inspiration from legendary Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to craft his own unique coaching style. Known for his commitment to possession-based football, Mokwena has dedicated himself to implementing a playing style that is not only effective but also pleasing to the eye. At only 38 years old, he has truly imprinted his DNA on the game and has garnered a reputation for being a modern-day coach with a keen eye for tactical intricacies. In this interview with Soccer Laduma's Thomas Kwenaite, the former Wydad Casablanca, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Orlando Pirates coach discusses his time in Morocco, the language barrier, the challenges, and his coaching methodology. He also shares his views about Thembinkosi Lorch, Cassius Mailula, and the general performances of Mamelodi Sundowns and the other three African clubs at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Thomas Kwenaite: Coach Rhulani, what are your impressions of the performances of Thembinkosi Lorch at the FIFA Club World Cup?

Rhulani Mokwena: I think it was relatively good. My impressions are that Lorch has really shown his capacities, his talent. You know there has been a lot of talk, but I think he has put everything on the pitch every time he has been selected to play and has shown everybody what he can do, especially in the performance against Manchester City. The performance was everything that you would want. He played on the left, sometimes in the number 10 position. He also played as a false nine and did really, really well both offensively and defensively initiating the press, supporting the press, and at times tried to play with Samuel Obeng. He is a very good player, and I think he has shown the rest of the continent his capacities.

TK: And Cassius Mailula’s performance?

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
