Let me congratulate Orlando Pirates on their 3-0 MTN8 final win against Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night. We are now back to our bread and butter, the Betway Premiership, while other teams will be participating in the CAF interclub competitions from this weekend. So, there is so much to look forward to and these are exciting times for our football supporters.

I was honoured and privileged to be one of the guests invited to coach Pitso Mosimane’s Brunch celebration at FNB Stadium. When I looked at the man of the moment, I remembered this is the guy who we struggled together with in the national team.

This is the guy who played football in the township streets of Soweto. This is the guy who didn’t only play locally but spent years enjoying his football overseas. This is the guy who we thought was crazy in the national team because he always refused to play without a vest underneath his shirt. At halftime, he would ask for a new jersey and take off the wet one he had played in, and it never made sense to us because we always started and finished the game in one jersey. We thought he was just being difficult but what he did changed everything! Today, you see players swapping jerseys at half time because they know they are getting new jerseys for the second half. That means Pitso was ahead of his time, and he went on to do the same thing in his coaching career, opening doors and being the first to a lot of things. He took the South African coaching to greater heights. I felt so honoured to receive his invite and then a call to say he would really like to see me at his event. That meant a lot to me because it was a star-studded event. There was leadership in the room as you can see Mr Khulu Sibiya, standing next to me, who is one of the people coach Pitso thanked in his speech for the massive role he played in his career, on and off the field. I was blown away by that speech because “Jingles” said this is the man who gave him the head-start to his career, and it touched my heart for him not to forget where he is coming from.

Will Pirates also suffer similar Downs fate?

Now that Pirates have contributed 9 players to the national team, the same fate that befell Sundowns could visit the Soweto team at the end of the AFCON.

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
