Suspect's details in case of rape 'must include ethnicity'
Scottish Sunday Express
|March 22, 2026
POLICE Scotland are being urged to include “skin colour” in public information appeals on rape and sexual assault cases amid concerns cops adopt a “two-tier” approach by selectively omitting ethnicity.
Critics claim the force’s approach raises questions about consistency, noting that details like height, build or clothing are included, yet ethnicity is often excluded, except when the suspect is described as white.
Police may seek to avoid stirring community tensions, but critics warn vague appeals can slow tips and potentially delay justice for victims.
Scottish Biometrics Commissioner Dr Brian Plastow said he supports policing measures that “provide preventative and effective policing responses” to combat male violence towards women and girls.
