WHILE many people relish the freedom of being single, it can come with a hefty price tag, especially in retirement.

Single retirees need close to £230,000 more in pension savings than couples to enjoy a similar standard of living in later life, new analysis from Standard Life shows.

Couples can share housing costs, bills and everyday expenses. Single pensioners, by contrast, must fund everything alone.

Crucially, those costs don't halve just because there's only one person in the household. So there is still some truth in the old phrase that “two can live as cheaply as one”.
