IT'S A CAPRI... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

When it comes to controversy in the automotive world, you can't get much greater than Ford deciding to revive its Capri badge for an upcoming electric car. A name originally worn by one of the Blue Oval's best-loved models. So can an EV live up to the Capri name or has Ford gone too far?

WHAT'S NEW?

The Capri is the result of a partnership between Ford and Volkswagen. Underneath, the MEB platform is the same as you'll find used on cars like the VW ID.3 and Cupra Born, while inside, there are telltale signs of German involvement, like VW switches.

But Ford has tried to carry over some of original Capri's features such as echoes of the old steering wheel.

UNDER THE BONNET?

Ford can lean upon Volkswagen's technical know-how with the Capri so it's available with a series of motor and battery setups.

A standard single-motor version is linked to a 52kWh battery for a range of up to 242 miles. There's then a single motor Extended Range variant which has a larger 72kWh battery and an impressive range of 389 miles.

We're in the range-topping dual-motor version, which gets the larger battery but with 335bhp output throttling the range back to 346 miles. The Capri's charging speed of 185kW allows a 10% to 80% charge to be completed in around 26 minutes on a speedy charger.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
