Glasgow skyscrapers plan twins city with Manhattan

GLASWEGIANS could be about to see their cityscape transformed with a Manhattan skyline.

Glasgow already evokes images of the Big Apple with its grid-iron street layout, and has doubled for the New York skyscraper district on screen.

And the similarities are set to increase after councillors unveiled new building regulations aimed at paving the way for skyscrapers.

While there is no set definition of a skyscraper, it is considered to be a continuously habitable building with multiple floors that reaches at least 100 metres (328 feet) in height.

There are 177 in the UK, 132 of them in London, 26 in Manchester, eight in Birmingham and four in Leeds. Other cities with at least one include Liverpool, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Swansea (the only such structure outside England).
