Johnstone Burgh win tricky clash against Girvan as they embark on cup campaign

- TAYLOR MURRAY

Johnstone Burgh began their defence of the Junior Cup - now known as the Communities Cup - with victory over Girvan.

Murdo MacKinnon saw his West of Scotland League Premier Division side progress in the competition at Hamilton Park on Saturday and make it four wins in their last four games.

Max Kerr and Kyle Lafferty both got on the scoresheet against the Third Division outfit to set up a third-round clash with Greenock Juniors at Keanie Park next month.

Burgh had a few early chances of which the best fell to Kerr in the 13th minute.

Kian Gilday's cross found the Burgh winger who thumped a volley towards goal but Seasiders keeper Michael Mullen pulled off a great save at his near post.

The hosts ensured the cup holders weren't going to have it all their own way as they looked to pose a real threat themselves by creating some half-chances.
