Airlines Now Mandated to Inform Passengers of Their Rights via SMS

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has introduced a new directive requiring airlines to proactively inform passengers of their rights.

Under this mandate, all airlines must send passengers a link to the Ministry of Civil Aviation's passenger charter via SMS or WhatsApp upon ticket booking. Additionally, airlines must ensure this information is prominently displayed on tickets and their websites.
The move follows a recent controversy involving an 83-year-old woman who was denied a pre-booked wheelchair by IndiGo Airlines at Delhi Airport. The incident sparked criticism and underscored a broader issue of passenger rights awareness. "Passengers are often unaware of their entitlements, leading to unnecessary inconvenience. This step ensures that they have access to the necessary information at all times,” a DGCA official stated.
