Before modern medical and childcare advances, babies were often fortunate if they survived various obstacles growing up. Maternity facilities were basic - for centuries mothers gave birth at home assisted by family members or community support.

Little could be done if there were complications at birth. With no effective birth control, many women had large families.

Newborns then had to overcome the various childhood illnesses that could prove fatal or result in disability.

Wealth and position did not give protection - none of Queen Anne's 17 children survived into adulthood. Throughout the population, poor hygiene or diet played a part along with environment.
