Iconic cop comedy rebooted

Back in 1988 The Naked Gun movie became a box office smash. It was based on a comedy TV series called Police Squad! But the filmmakers couldn't use that title as it was too close to Police Academy movies.

The spoof saga featured Leslie Nielsen as hapless DS Frank Drebin, who tries to thwart a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II on a visit to the US.

Nielsen had already starred in 1980 comedy movie Airplane! after switching from serious roles. The actor, who did many of his own stunts in Naked Gun, died in 2010, aged 84.

Priscilla Presley, ex-wife of singer Elvis Presley, was chosen to play Frank's love interest, Jane Spencer. Actress Bo Derek had turned down the part.
