Tartan Army members hit out as squad to wear trousers instead of our national dress in the States

- BY NORMAN SILVESTER

THE Scotland football squad are to ditch kilts in favour of tailored suits at this summer's World Cup.

But the move sparked fury from Scotland fans and kilt makers who last night demanded the national dress be worn.

Players wore kilts when the national team last qualified for the tournament under Craig Brown in France in 1998.

However the SFA has announced that Steve Clarke and his squad will wear “sharp, made-to-measure suits” in the USA in June.

Stuart Murphy, from fans group the Scottish Football Union, is disappointed kilts are being ditched.

He added: "What can be more Scottish than kilts? It's your national identity. I am sure the suits will look smart but 100 per cent it has to be kilts. We are announcing ourselves back to the world after almost 30 years.
