Flying start

Rise and shine: They say the early bird catches the worm… and there do seem to be health benefits for people who don’t lounge in bed. Researchers from the University of Warsaw in Poland found they were generally happier than night owls.

A study from Rutgers University in the US found “larks” were more active, had higher fitness levels and a lower risk of developing diabetes.

Set your alarm: Rising an hour earlier than usual has been associated with a 23 per cent lower risk of depression according to a US study.

And avoid hitting the snooze button. Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that natural grogginess can last longer if you do as the body releases more sleep hormones.

Brekkie bonus: Multiple investigations have linked those who regularly eat breakfast with a reduced risk for stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, while kids who skip breakfast have been found to do less well in exams.
