RINO GATTUSO:

No one knew the Italian when Walter Smith plucked him from Perugia in 1997 as a raw talent.

The fact his terrier-like style was more naturally Scottish allowed him to immediately ingratiate himself with the Gers support.

Gattuso, right, was a revelation when Smith gave him a chance in the first team, complementing a midfield that boasted the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Stuart McCall, Jorg Albertz and Ian Ferguson.

In his first season, he made 38 appearances and scored on his European debut v Strasbourg.

But after falling out of favour with new gaffer Dick Advocaat the following season, Gattuso was sold to Serie A minnows Salernitana for £4million.
