Swimmers ignoring signs putting beauty spot under threat

WILD swimmers are being urged to stay clear of a stunning mountain lake which has been named one of Europe's top spots for outdoor swimming.

Despite warning signs at the lake in Eryri (Snowdonia), online reports suggest people are still plunging in.

Swimming is banned in Llyn Idwal, nestled in the Ogwen Valley, as it’s not just any ordinary lake; it’s actually host to rare upland plant species and boasts international significance.

This idyllic spot lies within Cwm Idwal, a spectacular glacial corrie embraced by towering crags and designated as a national nature reserve - home to rare flora like the Snowdon Lily.

The picturesque lake, complete with a pebbly beach-like shoreline, has been promoted in recent years by various organisations as a great spot for wild swimming.

A car hire business listed it amongst its top ten wild swimming locations, and Red Bull labelled it as the second-best swimming lake in Wales, describing it as “deservedly popular” due to its beauty.

In 2023, an article from a caravanning magazine put Llyn Idwal third in its rundown of “Europe’s most idyllic wild swimming spots”.
