A FIRM of security guards have been hailed as "superheroes" for stepping in to help flood-hit residents as Storm Claudia battered the North Wales coast.

Staff from Phoenix Security North Wales Ltd launched an impromptu relief effort in Rhyl as torrential rain and strong winds battered the region on Friday night.

The Good Samaritans joined forces with builders merchants Jewsons to lay sandbags in doorways as the water rose, and to check on residents. One resident labelled them "superheroes" while another called them "amazing".

As Storm Claudia struck, drivers' journeys were disrupted across North Wales due to flooded roads. Rail passengers had to transfer to buses on Transport for Wales services between Blaenau Ffestiniog and North Llanrwst due to flooding.

Electricity customers lost power in some parts of the region. A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks told the Daily Post: "Ahead of Storm Claudia hitting we had our teams prepared and ready to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible.

"A small number of our customers were impacted due to the strong winds, but all those affected were restored quickly."

In Denbighshire, North Wales Police issued a warning about flooding in the Wellington Road area. The force had posted a message on its NWP Denbighshire Coastal and Abergele Facebook page on Friday at 10.14pm.
