New plans to end free parking at town site sparks call for rethink

A COUNCIL and its private sector partner are facing a fierce backlash over proposed new parking charges in an historic town.
A campaign of objection has been launched amid concerns the move will deter visitors and workers in Conwy.
Conwy Council is planning to introduce charges seven days a week at the main car park at Bodlondeb, its former headquarters. The building has been leased to Quidos Investments as a hub for entrepreneurs.
In a bid to appease critics, its director has offered concessions, including parking permits for volunteers, veterans, police, public servants and “anyone that has done anything to benefit the community”.
Nick Pritchard said he was also examining the use of iPads in local produce shops giving free parking for customers for up to 90 minutes.
Currently, the site charges for parking at weekends and bank holidays, with free parking during the week. New all-week charges would range from £1.50 for one hour to £6.50 for over four hours - and £3 for overnight (6pm-8am). Daylong parking (24 hours) would cost £7.50 - but motorhomes would not be allowed to stay overnight.
The potential loss of free weekday parking has kicked over a hornet's nest. Objection letters citing seven points of contention are being circulated, with comments required by Friday, December 19. If the new charges are pushed through, residents would like to see free or concessionary parking, or free permits.
