Keir Starmer and the Tories alike have said defence spending should be 2.5% of GDP, up from the current 2.3%, itself comfortably ahead of Nato's 2% goal. Playing one-upmanship, Lib Dem Ed Davey is now going for 3%. Ex-Army chief Richard Dannatt demands 3.5%.
