Every lorry within hundreds of yards of Trafalgar-square was commandeered by the crowd and went roaring down side streets filled with happy firework-throwing Service men and women.

Twelve buses "stranded" in the heart of the square were a target for anyone who fancied a bit of mountaineering.

Windows were kicked in and drivers and conductresses had to be rescued by the police.

And what a noise that crowd made. The bells of St. Martin-in-the-Fields were pealing, but could only be faintly heard.
