UK sends £10m of life-saving aid as quake deaths hit 1,700

Time running out for survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings

THE UK has pledged up to £10million in life-saving aid for Myanmar after at least 1,700 people were killed in Friday's devastating earthquake.

The Foreign Office said there will be a focus on food and water supplies, medicine and shelter.

At least 2,376 people were injured by the 7.7 magnitude quake.

Baroness Jennifer Chapman, minister of state for development, said: "The UK is sending immediate and life-saving support. UK-funded local partners are already mobilising a humanitarian response on the ground and this £10million package will bolster their efforts.

"I offer my deepest sympathies to the people of Myanmar after this tragic event."
