Ex-soldier Daniel Barr, 41, leapt into the automatic Ford Galaxy and forced its gear selector into 'park' to end the chaos.

At Liverpool crown court judge Andrew Menary KC commended the Liverpool FC fan, making a £250 High Sheriff's Award for Bravery for his "exceptional courage and presence of mind".

The judge added: "When many feared for their own safety he ran towards the danger, entered a moving vehicle and brought it to a halt, preventing further injury and quite possibly saving lives."
