Swimmers are rescued from rip current after ignoring warnings

A PAIR of swimmers were swept out to sea from a beach after ignoring warnings from a lifeguard to exit the water.

The incident happened on Saturday, July 5, just before 6pm, when a group of three people were seen wading into the water at the north end of Crantock beach, just as the RNLI lifeguards on duty were preparing to end their shift.

A PA announcement was made asking the trio to leave the water due to the dangerous conditions and this was followed by another warning just a few moments later.

One of the swimmers made it back to shore, but the remaining two, a young man and woman, appeared to signal for help before being suddenly swept out, disappearing from view.

Lifeguards Anthony Kilday and Greg Spray quickly launched two rescue boards, but the challenging conditions made it difficult to locate the casualties.
