A MAJOR manhunt is underway after an elephant was illegally hunted and its poisoned carcass led to the deaths of over 120 vultures in the Kruger National Park, in what authorities are calling one of the worst environmental crimes in recent years.
According to reports, on May 8, the Phalaborwa police received information about an elephant carcass found in the Mushiyani Block, Mahlangeni area of the park. Preliminary investigations revealed the elephant had been trapped using a cable snare, after which the poachers laced the carcass with poison - an act that had devastating consequences on surrounding wildlife.
