City subway to shut as new bike lanes are created

THE subway that runs underneath Redcliff Hill is set to permanently close today for Bristol City Council to create separate cycle lanes and plant new trees ahead of the Bedminster Bridges project.

The council will also widen and upgrade a nearby pedestrian crossing between Redcliffe Sixth Form Centre and the Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel.
Signs were placed outside each entrance to the subway announcing it would be closed at the end of August, one of which had been tagged with graffiti. A few shopping trolleys were abandoned inside the underpass, which was still accessible on the morning of September 1.
