Payout for man hounded for 14-year-old city debt

A BIRMINGHAM man has been awarded financial compensation after the city council's 'unreasonable' attempt to chase a 14-year-old council tax debt.
Birmingham City Council tried to recover £2,600 from the resident in late 2024 - more than a decade after he lived at the property.
The resident, referred to as Mr C in a housing ombudsman's report, claimed the ordeal had caused him distress after he received two summons despite a 'lack' of information to go on. The ombudsman ruled that the authority was at fault for sending two court summons "without explanation" about how the debt had arisen - causing Mr C "distress".
