Flood risk sends locals scurrying to higher ground

People living along the Pa Sak River in Phetchabun’s Muang district have been warned to quickly move their belongings to higher ground as the municipality could soon be inundated again.
Provincial governor Saranyu Meethongkham alerted all agencies yesterday to the heightened risk of flooding in the district.
A large volume of floodwater moving down the river was expected to reach the municipality last night, he said. The province prepared 5,000 sandbags to defend the city.
Municipal mayor Seksan Niyompeng said Monday that some communities were seriously at risk due to the strong current flowing downstream from Lom Sak and Lom Kao districts.
Caregivers should stand by to evacuate bedridden patients to safe havens, he said.
Flooding had already shut several roads, and at least five schools had been forced to cancel classes.
