Elephants need space

Elephants hold a special place in the hearts of Thais.

The latest evidence was Wednesday's protest following the death of Seedor Hu Pab, a male elephant that died on Feb 3 during a ham-fisted relocation attempt by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).Angered animal protection activists have demanded the resignation of DNP chief Attapon Charoenchansa over the elephant's death, which occurred during its relocation from Khon Kaen province to Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary in Loei province.

The wild elephant was moved after it wandered into human settlements, leading to the deaths of two people.

The case of Seedor Hu Pab, however, has laid bare a far bigger problem: the growing conflict between humans and wildlife over shrinking habitats.
