The speed camera that's no more after sign scandal
Accrington Observer
|October 10, 2025
MORE than two decades after a controversial Hyndburn speed camera caused outrage amongst motorists, the story behind its removal remains at the forefront of locals' minds.
In 2000, the speed limit on Whalley Road in Great Harwood was reduced from 40mph to 30mph along with the installation of Hyndburn's first speed camera. However, signs advising motorists of the new limit were 'unclear' due to their position, and many drivers were given points on their licence.
Pensioner Rod McLennan succeeded in having the charges against him dismissed after he argued that he was unaware the speed limit had been reduced. Another motorist, Carol Harrison, had four charges against her dismissed.
