This 29th September, as we celebrate World Heart Day with the theme "Don't Miss the Beat", let us pledge to practice and keep the heart healthy
-
The cardiovascular (CVD) disease burden in India is enormous, with nearly 55 million people suffering from heart diseases. 28% of all deaths are because of cardiovascular diseases. Further, 20-25% of acute heart attacks in the country occur in individuals less than 40 years of age as compared to only 5-10 % in the Western population. The risk factors for heart diseases are well known, which include: Lack of exercise, smoking, junk/ unhealthy food, excess alcohol use, environmental pollution, DM, Hypertension, Hyperlipidaemia and obesity. It is thus essential to impress upon health policymakers and society the importance of preventive efforts. The policy interventions aim to ensure the regulation of tobacco/ alcohol control, as well as adequate steps regarding environmental pollution and food adulteration. To provide a workplace/ health and wellness programme. Everyone around 30 should be encouraged to have a heart health screening evaluation.
