KATH & KIM: OUR EFFLUENT LIFE, Monday, November 28, TVNZ 2, 8.55pm

Judged from this side of the Tasman, the title for greatest Australian television sitcom would probably go to The Games (because of John Clarke) or Frontline (because of Bruno Lawrence). But, of course, the title really belongs to Kath & Kim (no New Zealanders involved), a show that turns 20 this year, the anniversary being celebrated with two specials on consecutive nights, which we’re getting a week after they hit Aussie screens.

The first, Kath & Kim: Our Effluent Life, tells us what’s happened to Kath (Jane Turner), Kim (Gina Riley), Kel (Glenn Robbins) Brett (Peter Rowsthorn) and Sharon (Magda Szubanski) in the intervening years at 4 Lagoon Court, Fountain Lakes, Melbourne.

Apparently, Kim has struck it rich, hence the title derived from one of the original show’s many memorable malapropisms. As Kath once reminded her daughter: “You are effluent, Kim. I mean, look at what you’ve got: a Hyundai to hightail it round in, a half share in a home unit, a DVD player, a mobile. I mean, what else is there?”
