SUGAR COPPER BLUE

August 2025

I bought Sugar's Copper Blue in 1992 on the back of a great review in the NME and I also got to see the band live when they toured the UK.

SUGAR COPPER BLUE

SUGAR RUSH

I was only 16 at the time and did not know who Bob Mould was, which was great as I was able to then delve into his previous work with Hüsker Dü. Though Hüsker Dü have now received great acclaim, there seems to be less said about Sugar, whom I actually prefer. While original Hüsker Dü albums seem to be going up in price, what is the situation regarding my original copy of Copper Blue - with insert - which, I would say, is in Very Good+ condition? I played it a lot, which is how it should be! Gary Jennings via email Bob Mould started his musical career in America in 1979 with Hüsker Dü. When they split up around 1987, he went solo for two years. While Hüsker Dü received no shortage of critical acclaim, their sales were low and Mould's solo work also sold in small quantities.

Ironically, the mainstream success of Nirvana, whose sound owed a debt to the hardcore/punk sound of Hüsker Dü, played a part in people enjoying Mould's next musical project, Sugar, whose line-up comprised former Mercyland bass player David Barbe and Human Sexual Response and Zulus drummer Malcolm Travis. Mould took care of guitar and vocals.

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKERS

In 1975, 10cc and Queen reigned supreme with I'm Not In Love and that also happened to be the Christmas No 1. But how did both Bohemian Rhapsody. The former was the chart-topping sound of the game-changing singles happen that year, and which, wonders Paul summer and a production landmark, the latter a multi-part song-suite McNulty, remains the most revolutionary example of 70s songcraft?

33½ minutes with...Brinsley Schwarz

It's 60 years since Brinsley Schwarz made his recording bow, a handful of singles with the semi-psychedelic pop band Kippington Lodge, but he became a more visible presence later in the decade when he lent his name to the pub rock figureheads who also included Nick Lowe in their number.
