Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, died 20 November, age 63. The bassist was a member of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream. Joining the Roses in 1987 – replacing bass player Pete Garner – Mani’s presence proved a galvanising force as the group became kingpins of the emergent Madchester scene.

Not Forgotten

Combining indie, jangle-pop and elements of rave music, their 1989 self-titled debut became one of the era’s defining albums. Mani’s driving, elastic basslines were at the heart of the group’s sound and worked in combination with drummer Alan “Reni” Wren to add a danceable, funk-laced rhythmic backing to John Squire’s superlative guitar work and Ian Brown’s nonchalant vocals on classic songs such as I Wanna Be Adored, I Am The Resurrection, She Bangs The Drums and the epic, standalone single Fools Gold. After the album’s success, and a legendary performance at Spike Island in 1990, the group became embroiled in a legal battle with their record label, Silvertone. The Roses finally released their belated followup LP, Second Coming, on new label Geffen in 1994, a blues-heavy effort that met with a mixed reception on release, though lead single Love Spreads reached No 2 in the UK charts. In 1996, following the departures of Reni and Squire, the group called it a day.

Joining Primal Scream, Mani was credited with reviving the Scottish group’s fortunes with his first two albums for the band, 1997’s acclaimed dance/rock hybrid album Vanishing Point (for which he co-wrote the single Kowalski) and its 2000-issued followup, XTRMNTR. His tenure with the band, which yielded three further LPs, also saw him involved with side-project Freebass, a bassist supergroup alongside New Order’s Peter Hook and Andy Rourke from The Smiths. The group released several EPs and an album, 2010’s It’s a Beautiful Life. He left Primal Scream to join a reformed Stone Roses in 2011 which toured, played festivals and released two new songs – All For One and Beautiful Thing – before finally disbanding in 2017.

Karin Glenmark, died 30 October, age 75. The Swedish singer was part of the sibling duo, Gemini, alongside her brother Anders. They released two albums produced by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus in the 80s, Gemini

THIS WAS THE MODERN WORLD

In the late 70s, as punk’s blast of insurrectionary fire began to flame out, many of those inspired to get up onstage began to look further back for inspiration – to the mods of the previous decade, all sharp sense of style and gritty R’n’B pop.

ALL HAIL "THE CABS

Key movers in the growth of electronic music in the north of England in the 70s, Cabaret Voltaire influenced a host of nascent electronic bands who would take those sounds into the mainstream: neighbours The Human League, Mancunian friends New Order and US industrial behemoths like Nine Inch Nails to name but three.
