The art of blàths is a warmth of spirit woven through the lives and landscapes of the Scottish islands

- by COINNEACH MacLEOD

The Small Things

THERE is nowhere quite like the Hebrides. A string of islands scattered off Scotland's west coast, these islands might sit at the edge of the map, but they are right at the heart of what makes this country special.

It is a place where the postman knows your dog's name, the shopkeeper sets aside your usual, and a neighbour who pops in “just for five minutes” ends up staying for three cups of tea, a bowl of soup and to help tile your bathroom!

But what truly defines our islands is something less tangible, yet felt in every greeting and every plate of scones set down before you: blàths.

It’s a word that doesn’t quite translate. Warmth and contentment, yes - but not just the sort that comes from sitting by the stove.

It’s a warmth of spirit. A way of living that puts people before pace and kindness above convenience.

imageIn the Hebrides, blàths isn’t a luxury - it’s a way of life.

And here's the best part: you don’t have to live on an island to live like an islander.

The art of blàths reminds us to cherish warmth and contentment, both in our physical spaces and in our hearts. Embracing the principles of island living allows us to treasure the small things and to find richness in simplicity.

So here's to bringing a little bit of blàths into your own life, wherever you may be.

imageEggs, Cake And A Pot Of Jam

Picture this: you come home to find a loaf of gingerbread cooling on your kitchen table, a dozen eggs in a recycled ice-cream tub and a jar of bramble jam with a note that reads, “Just popped in for a cèilidh. Stop by the next time you're passing”.
