Hummel y su amigo Matt McCauley crecieron buscando otro tipo de tesoros en el lago Washington, al este de Seattle, con gafas de buceo. Se conocieron en una clase de socorrismo en su primer año de instituto. Cuando tenía 19 años, McCauley, con la ayuda de Hummel, reconstruyó una barca de cinco metros que sacaron del fondo del lago utilizando flotadores.
Siempre demostraron un enorme ingenio en sus hazañas de recuperación. “Íbamos a las gasolineras a pedir mangueras y las uníamos”, explica McCauley, hoy de 58 años. A través de estas mangueras, un barco en la superficie del lago les suministraba aire mientras se sumergían.
