Understanding the Fast Heartbeat Disorder
-
What is Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)?
SVT is a type of heart rhythm problem (arrhythmia) that starts in the upper chambers of the heart (atria). “Supraventricular” means “above the ventricles,” and “tachycardia” means “fast heartbeat.”
During an episode of SVT, the heart may beat 150 to 250 times per minute, compared to the normal rate of 60-100. These sudden bursts of rapid heartbeats can last for a few seconds, minutes, or even hours.
Common Symptoms of SVTNot everyone with SVT experiences the same symptoms. Some people may feel very uncomfortable, while others barely notice it. Common signs include:
- A sudden racing heartbeat or pounding in the chest
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
- Fatigue or weakness
- Feeling anxious during an episode.
In rare cases, fainting may occur if the heart is unable to pump blood effectively during the rapid rhythm.
