Preventing Pelvic Organ Prolapse Lifestyle Changes and Risk Reduction
Health Vision
|April 2024
Pelvic organ prolapse is a common yet often overlooked condition that can significantly impact a woman’s quality of life.
-
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a condition that affects millions of women worldwide, yet it remains relatively misunderstood and underdiscussed. It occurs when the muscles and ligaments supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing one or more of the organs to bulge into the vagina.
• Causes:
• Pregnancy and childbirth: The strain of pregnancy and childbirth, particularly vaginal delivery, can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and lead to prolapse.
• Aging: As women age, the tissues that support the pelvic organs naturally weaken, increasing the risk of prolapse.
• Chronic constipation and straining: Chronic constipation and frequent straining during bowel movements can put pressure on the pelvic floor and contribute to prolapse.
• Obesity: Excess weight can put additional strain on the pelvic floor muscles and increase the risk of prolapse.
• Genetic predisposition: Some women may have a genetic predisposition to pelvic organ prolapse, making them more susceptible to developing the condition.
• Symptoms:
The symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse can vary depending on the severity of the condition and which organs are involved. Common symptoms include:
• A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvic area: Many women with pelvic organ prolapse describe a sensation of heaviness or pressure in the vagina or pelvic region.
• Pelvic pain: Discomfort or pain in the pelvis, lower abdomen, or lower back can occur as a result of pelvic organ prolapse.

Bone Health Why It Matters Across Your Entire Life
Bone health isn't something that suddenly matters after age 60. Healthy bones are essential from infancy through old age — they support movement, protect vital organs, help regulate mineral balance (like calcium), and act as a reservoir for essential nutrients. But bone strength doesn't stay static: it changes throughout life due to growth, hormonal shifts, lifestyle factors, and aging.
