Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide; every sixth death in the world is due to cancer, making it the second leading cause of death-second only to cardiovascular diseases.
World cancer day held on every 4th February is the global uniting initiative led by Union for International cancer control, a day to raise awareness on prevention, detection, and treatment of the cancer.
• What is Cancer?
Cancer is 2nd leading cause of death worldwide, the most common cancers are Breast, lung, colon, rectum and prostate cancers, 10 million people die from cancer every year. More than 40% of cancer-related deaths could be preventable by adopting a healthy life style. Many cancers can be cured if detected early and treated effectively.
• What causes cancer?
Cancers arises from the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells in a multi-stage process that generally progresses from a pre-cancerous lesion to a malignant tumor.
• What are the risk factors for cancer?
Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution are major risk factors for cancer. Viral infections including Helicobactor pylori, Human papilloma virus and Hepatitis B and Epstein-Barr virus increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Cancers of Breast, bowel, stomach and prostate cancers can be hereditary.
