KEELEY HAWES and FREDDIE HIGHMORE on playing a mum and son embroiled in a game of survival

- IAN MACEWAN

GREEK tragedy

THE ASSASSIN NEW FROM FRIDAY 25 JULY, PRIME VIDEO THRILLER

The last onscreen excursion Keeley Hawes made to Greece was as a devoted mum of four starting a new life on Corfu in ITV's hit comedy drama The Durrells. Now, the acclaimed actor makes a return visit for The Assassin, an action thriller landing on Prime Video this week that explores a dysfunctional relationship between a mother and son.

Created by writing brothers Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing, Liar), the six-parter sees Keeley play retired contract killer Julie, whose solitary life on an idyllic island is interrupted when her semi-estranged lad, investigative journalist Edward (The Good Doctor star Freddie Highmore), turns up asking awkward questions about his father.

imageWhen events take a terrifying turn, however, the pair go on the run together, and their lives entwine with respected local butcher Luka (Love Rat's Gerald Kyd), plus wealthy siblings Kayla (Baby Reindeer's Shalom Brune-Franklin) and Ezra (Australian actor Devon Terrell).

As Julie and Edward embark on a dangerous quest that will take them across the globe, can they find a way to work together in their fight for survival?

Here, Keeley, 49, and Freddie, 33, tell TV Times why the story is set to have us on the edge of our seats...

Where do we find Julie and Edward as the series begins?
