TIM HENMAN on what to expect as this year's tournament gets under way
-
WIMBLEDON LIVE MON-FRI, TIMES VARY, BBC1, BBC2 & BBC IPLAYER SPORT
Get ready to serve up the strawberries and cream, as the gates of The All England Lawn Tennis Club swing open on Monday to welcome thousands of fans to its world-famous courts for this year's Wimbledon.
Over the next 14 days, the BBC will bring us all the action from SW19, with Clare Balding once again leading the coverage up to Sunday 13 July.
'Wimbledon is far more than just a tennis tournament - it's very much part of the social calendar,' says former British pro Tim Henman, 50, a four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist, who is again providing expert commentary. 'The history and tradition are cornerstones of the event, and with the grass courts and the white clothing, it's just so special.'
Here, Tim, who retired from the sport in 2007, tells TV Times which players to watch out for in the 138th Championships...After Sir Andy Murray's retirement in 2024, a lot of British hopes are pinned on 23-year-old Jack Draper in the men's singles. How do you think he'll fare against Italian pro Jannik Sinner, the world No 1, and Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion?
Sinner and Alcaraz are the favourites, with [Serbian ace] Novak Djokovic very close behind. However, Jack is at the front of the group behind them. I think his game has improved considerably in the past 12 months and he's played some phenomenal tennis. He's still relatively inexperienced, but, physically, he's right up there with the very best.
Alcaraz has won Wimbledon twice, so he knows his way around a grass court. But, as a Brit, Jack played a lot of junior events on grass, which will help him, for sure.
