Stepping into St. Michael's Church of England High School on April 25, Prince William greeted 12-year-old Freddie Hadley, who had written him a heartfelt letter inviting the prince to witness the school's mental health initiatives firsthand. Sharing laughs with Freddie and his classmates, William, 41, relaxed the room with a classic knock-knock joke loved by his 9-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte. "He settled their nerves so quickly," says head teacher Christina Handy-Rivett. Departing an hour later with an armful of gifts for his family, including uplifting LEGO sunflowers for his wife, Princess Kate, 42-who has been out of the public eye since she shared her cancer diagnosis on March 22 and began chemotherapy treatment-William greeted a group of excited children outside, bantering about their favorite soccer teams and feeding off their infectious energy. "There's nothing like interacting with kids to bring you up," says a palace insider. "He draws great support from public reaction and empathy."
William needs that support now more than ever. Remaining upbeat for the public is vital for the Prince of Wales, and he's facing this test head-on. Kate's health, which she has not elaborated on in terms of cancer type, presents the most significant challenge among several hurdles William has faced this year. In February he navigated the cancer diagnosis of his father, King Charles, 75, along with intense social media speculation that began after Kate's abdominal surgery in January (which resulted in her diagnosis). In March both the palace and Kate were swept into high-profile controversy surrounding the princess's editing of a Mother's Day photo featuring her with Charlotte and sons Prince George, 10, and Prince Louis, 6.
