NWK asks Eskom to restore power to Lichtenburg

The demise of South Africa’s municipalities and the ever-decreasing capacity to deliver basic services such as electricity are increasingly impacting on local consumers’ ability to afford food and compromises food security, according to Dr Johan Willemse, an independent agricultural economist.
He issued the warning following a public plea by the NWK agribusiness to the authorities to restore the power supply to its Epko sunflower oil crushing plant in Lichtenburg.
NWK said in a statement that the plant, with the capacity to crush 600t of seeds per day and produce 210t of crude oil, virtually came to a standstill because of the shortage of electricity. The problems started after a transformer in the town broke down on 27 July 2023.
