With deep pockets and an aggressive execution playbook, Birla Opus in just a year since its launch has upended the paint industry's comfort zone By ARJUN YADAV
-
IN FEBRUARY 2024, when the Aditya Birla Group (ABG) launched its decorative paints business, Birla Opus, from the industrial township of Panipat, it sent shockwaves across the paint industry. Then, many would not have seen a connection between merely an entry and shaking the industry as a whole. And rightly so, considering this is an industry dominated by one player, which commands 55-60 per cent of the market share, despite the presence of other well-established players over the years.
What was it that the ABG sought to do differently? The launch event in Panipat had several cues. This business is a play of distribution and the network with dealers. The group ensured that the entire contractor and dealer community from across the country was present to experience the Birla Opus product lineup firsthand. Things got intense when a senior executive of ABG, just before Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla's address, stated that the number one player in the industry was trying to prevent these dealers and contractors from attending the launch event.
This statement was significant, underscoring how the group would tap into this community and, more importantly, how it was ready to take on the number one player - Asian Paints. Things became even more clear when Kumar Mangalam Birla called this entry a “strategic extension”. He explained how the group's deep insight into the building materials ecosystem - primarily cement, through its brands such as Ultratech Cement and Birla White -- offers a unique vantage point.
The goal was clear; it just didn’t want to be another player. Instead, the group explicitly stated its ambition of becoming the second-largest player in the Indian decorative paints market within the next 3-4 years, with a revenue of Rs 10,000 crore. Its execution plan unveiled at the launch event seemed to be in sync with this ambition.
